Popovic is a singer/guitarist who has been marketed as a Blues performer. One listen to this disc will quickly let you know that her music may be rooted in Blues but she is really a Rock artist. True, she does cover the standard “Sitting on Top of the World” and the Eddie Taylor classic “Big Town Playboy”. Both featured screaming guitar solos, driving beats and little similarity to the usual renditions of these songs. I am certainly in favor of fresh interpretations of material but let’s include truth in advertising. Ana and her band rock hard throughout the disc, pausing for two musical tributes to some of her heroes – “Navajo Moon” captures the sound of Stevie Ray Vaughan and the feel of guitarist Ronnie Earl while “Jaco” was written after Popovic read a biography of the famed bass player. As a guitarist, Ana is a solid player who makes liberal use of numerous effects devices. The audience at this show seems to really enjoy the performance. It captures Popovic on a good night playing a variety of her rock –oriented originals. Definitely worth a listen if you don’t mind a healthy dose of Rock with your Blues.
