Lonnie Brooks at Father’s Day Hospice Benefit Concert at Lyran Park in Rockford Lonnie Brooks and his band appeared at Lyran Park in Rockford on Father’s Day, June 20th. Accompanied by his younger son Wayne Baker Brooks on guitar, bassist Andre Howard, Brian James on keyboards and Mike Robdard on drums, Lonnie wowed the crowd for over three hours. The guitarist from the Beat Merchants accompanied Lonnie for several numbers at the end of both sets. Wayne opened up leading the band for both sets and introduced the elder Brooks to the crowd. Lonnie’s performance and looks belie his age of 70 years. He is still vibrant and energetic, like a much younger man. He masterfully went through much of his standard repertoire of blues numbers. Wayne also did some tracks from his new album entitled “Mysterious.” Dan Klefstad from WNIU in DeKalb emceed the concert and all events throughout the day leading up to the Brooks concert. The concert capped a full day of blues music at Lyran Park. The event was a Father’s Day Benefit for Hospice. The planned music schedule was 12:00 Dorothy Paige-Turner, 1:15 Dean Moriarity, 2:15 Ryan Swanson Quartet, 3:30 Ernie Hendrickson, 4:30 Pistol Pete, 5:45 The Beat Merchants and 7:00 Lonnie Brooks. Pistol Pete was not able to perform but the rest of the acts filled in around the hole and made for a great day of blues.
