Allman
Brothers Open This Year’s “On the Waterfront” Festival

The Allman Brothers Band will perform at Davis Park to kick off this year’s “On The Waterfront Festival” in Rockford on September 2nd.  They have another area performance indoors on Wednesday night, September 1st, at the Rosemont Theater.  The band is a mix of old and new members, with Gregg Allman (vocals and keyboards), Jaimoe (drums), Butch Trucks (drums and tympani), Warren Haynes (vocals, lead and slide guitar), Oteil Burbridge (bass), Marc Quiñones (congas and percussion) and Derek Trucks (slide and lead guitar).  Warren Haynes also tours with the Dead and his own band, Government Mule.  The Derek Trucks Band also tours and has released four albums of their own over the last few years (note: Derek is the nephew of long-time Allman’s drummer Butch Trucks). Oteil Burbridge is involved in many musical endeavors in addition to touring with the Allman Brothers.

This past March, The Allman Brothers Band released a new double live CD titled "One Way Out". It is a compilation of the band’s annual ‘March Madness’ set of concerts at New York’s Beacon Theatre from March of 2003.  One of the tracks is “Instrumental Illness,” a new song nominated for a Grammy this year in the “Best Rock Instrumental Performance” category.  The band’s 2003 Beacon run of concerts was previously documented on DVD last year ("Live at the Beacon Theatre"); the DVD reached multi-platinum status.  This twin CD set includes some different takes and additional live tracks not on the DVD.  The 18-track release includes both new and old numbers from the band.  The new songs are from "Hittin’ the Note", the band’s 2003 studio album and their first album of new material in nine years (also on Peach/Sanctuary Records).  Allman’s standards like “Statesboro Blues”, “Midnight Rider”, “Trouble No More” “Ain’t Wastin” Time No More”, and “Whippin’ Post” are included on the new release.

Some noteworthy Allman Brothers Band accolades:

• Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994

• One of only two artists whose live albums ranked in the top 50 of Rolling Stone’s recently published list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” (the two albums were: The Allman Brothers Band “At Fillmore East” and James Brown’s was “Live At The Apollo”)

Rockford blues and rock fans will find the Allman’s rejuvenated and sounding more like the original band.  Greg is back in superb voice while Warren and Derek play back and forth in a manner similar to the young Duane Allman and Dickey Betts.  Burbridge is superb on bass while the addition of Quiñones to Trucks and Jaimoe on percussion give the band’s signature sound a fresh overhaul.  The quality of their music has not been this good since “Eat a Peach” was released in 1972.  The concert stands be a great one to kickoff an all-star blues lineup for the festival.
